Haiti Days 10-12

Day 10

"Faith is an action of the heart through submission to God." - Haitian Pastor

I had the best conversation with Ally on the roof tonight. We shared about different times God has been evident in our lives and the miracles we've experienced. It's amazing how faithful God has been to me. Gratitude has invaded my heart. I feel invigorated! I can't wait to see how I can fuse my schooling and career with where my heart is. My heart is here.

Day 11

Today we did a VBS for the kids. Ostanel taught them about Creation and Noah's Ark. It was short and sweet but the kids enjoyed it. We asked them to draw their favorite creations. The girls drew flowers and the boys drew cars. Typical. The rest of the time was fun and exhausting as usual. I took a nap face down on the concrete with Christine and Emmanuelo. It was surreal to wake up in the orphanage. I felt like I was five years old again.

Day 12

We went to the orphanage earlier than usual this morning. I sat down with Ostanel and took pictures of each child and collected their information. It was the first time I had ever really heard about their families. It was strange that the happy, playful kids I saw had all lost at least one parent. I thought of how grateful I had been for the new Indiana moms at camp and how comforting they were when they slipped us extra snacks. I wish that for these kids. There is nothing like a mother's love. Before noon we loaded into the tap tap and drove to Ostanel's house for lunch. His wife Betina made barbecue chicken, potatoes, corn, rice and an onion tart. It was delicious! It was so nice to share an authentic meal inside a cozy house. I love how real this trip has been. My heart is heavy. Tomorrow we say goodbye.
